Danielle,

Thanks for the comment. I did indeed end up buying a copy of the New Routledge Dutch dictionary, as it seemed the best one available for my needs. You might also check out some of Van Dale's electronic dictionaries; they offer a variety of them.

Ok, I'm a little late posting this, but in the event that someone should read this almost two years later....

The Van Dale dictionaries are for DUTCH NATIVE SPEAKERS. They don't provide useful information for foreign learners e.g gender of dutch nouns, phonetics to help with the pronunciation of a new dutch word and irregular verb conjugations etc etc.

Unfortunately, I am yet to find a dictionary for English native speakers with as many word entries as the Van Dale dictionaries.

I think the New Routledge seems to be the best on the market at the moment. It doesn't have quite as many entries as the large Van Dale, but it is a lot more useful for English people learning Dutch, as it contains all the extra important information that the Van Dale lacks.

Let's hope somebody fills the gap in the market soon.... until then, the internet is always a good back up.

If you want to a good dictionary, you should get the 'Van Dale' dictionary. I am a native Dutch speaker and use it a lot too. It's very complete. The only downside of it is that it is quite costly.

I made that mistake when learning Dutch. I recommend the Van Dale Basiswoordenboek Nederlands as that is a basic dictionary aimed at children older than 10, it gives the Genders and simple Dutch definitions of the words. Together with the Prisma book you have a good combination.
